Absorption vs Scattering

Interactions Influencing Penetration

  • Absorption is an exponential decay in intensity along any path at a rate of μa.
  • Many "micro" scattering events are often characterized by their average distance and angle, i.e., "macro" information, which is reduced scattering oefficient μs'.
  • Combined, these processes lead to a general "mushrooming" of the beam, i.e., a decay in intensity and spread of the beam with depth inside the patient.
