Calibration

There are four tools available for calibrating the image within the Viewer using an object of a known length. This object that will be used for calibration should be placed within the image at the height of the anatomy of interest. i.e. if the knee is to be imaged, the calibration object should be elevated to the height of the knee during imaging.

note

Sound includes a calibration device with the OrthoPlan® purchase which consists of a 25mm ball and articulating arm for ease of imaging with a calibration device.

Measurements of an image will use the DICOM Tag  Imager Pixel Spacing (0018,1164)  for the DX family of DICOM Images or  Nominal Scanned Pixel Spacing (0018,2010)  for the Multi-frame SC family of DICOM Images to calculate the measurements. If these tags are absent, measurements will be measured in Pixels.

SmartPACS provides Calibration tools to calibrate an image. The Calibration Group is where you can find the Calibration by Units, Percentage, Single Point Circle, Two Point Circle, and by Two Sphere Marker Tools.

caution

Calibrating an image will require the removal of all unsaved existing annotations. If annotations are present you will see a Warning.

Calibration Warning

Pressing the  OK  button will remove all the existing annotations from the image. Pressing the  Cancel  button will close the warning without removing the existing annotations.

Calibration By Units#

This tool allows you to define the scale of an image by measuring an object of known length in the image. This is an interactive tool. While active, press on the image on one side of the object to be measured. Drag the cursor to the other end of the object and release. The Calibration Dialog will be displayed.

Calibration Dialog

Enter in the length of the object in centimeters and press the  OK  button. Pressing the  Cancel  button will abort the calibration.

Calibration By Percentage#

Calibration By Percentage Icon

This tool allows you to scale the measurements by a specific percentage. Selecting this tool will open the Calibration Dialog.

Calibration Dialog Percent

Enter a percentage to scale by and press the  OK  button to apply it. Pressing the  Cancel  button will close the dialog and not apply the scaling.

Calibration By Circle – One Point#

Calibration By Circle Icon - One Point

This tool allows you to define the scale of an image by measuring a circular object within the image such as the calibration ball provided by Sound. This is a single click tool. While active, press on the image in the center of the calibration ball within the image. The software automatically display a 3-point adjustable circle overlay along the perimeter of the circle.

note

If the 3-point circle does not precisely align along the calibration ball perimeter, press and drag one of the editable red grab points until the line is displayed as desired.

The Calibration Dialog will also be displayed.

Enter in the length of the object in centimeters and press the  OK  button. Pressing the  Cancel  button will abort the calibration.

note

25.4 mm is the default.

Calibration By Circle – Two Points#

This tool allows you to define the scale of an image by measuring a circular object within the image such as the calibration ball provided by Sound. This is a two click tool. While active, press on the image on one side of the circular object to be measured. Drag the cursor to the other end of the object and release.

Calibration By Circle Icon - Two Points

The software automatically display a 3-point adjustable circle overlay along the perimeter of the circle and the Calibration Dialog will be displayed. If the 3-point circle does not precisely align along the calibration ball perimeter, press and drag one of the editable red grab points until the line is displayed as desired.

Enter in the length of the object in centimeters and press the  OK  button. Pressing the  Cancel  button will abort the calibration.

note

25.4 mm is the default.

Calibration By Line Marker with Two Spheres#

Calibration By Line Marker - Two Spheres

This tool allows you to define the scale of an image by measuring an object of known length in the image. This is an interactive tool. While active, press on the image inside one of the calibration spheres in the object to be measured. The software automatically displays the first 3-point adjustable circle along the perimeter of the first sphere. Press on the image inside the second calibration sphere and the software will display the second 3-point adjustable circle.
