Import
SmartPACS can import DICOM files. These can be imported directly or into a selected patient or study. The admin user also has the ability to import non-DICOM images. The image files that can be imported are JPEG, BMP, PNG and GIF, which are converted to DICOM Secondary Capture Files.
DICOM
To import DICOM files and preserve the DICOM Tags within the files, select DICOM from the Import drop-down. The Import Dialog box will appear. Here you can add files to be imported. To select individual files, press the Browse to Image(s) button. To select entire folders, press the Browse to Folder button. Files selected for import will be listed in the box above.
If you have added a file in error, you can select it from the list and press the Delete button.
You can also drag individual files or folders into the main section of the Import Dialog.
Folder drag and drop is only supported for Google Chrome version 21 or higher.
If you would like to override the Patient ID of the files, enter one in the Patient ID field.
This will override the Patient ID in all of the selected DICOM files. This should only be used when all the DICOM images are associated with the same patient.
Press the Import button to start the import. Pressing the Cancel button will cancel the import.

When the import is complete, a notification will be displayed with the result. If the import was not successful, it will list the files that could not be imported. Press the OK button to close the notification.
If a large import is in progress, the studies may begin to appear on the study list while the import process is still occurring. Please allow the import process to complete prior to data manipulation.
Advanced
The ability to import DICOM or image files with the Advanced utility depends on user privileges. The admin account can import both DICOM and non-DICOM image files either to a new patient, selected patient or a selected study in the study list. The local account can import non-DICOM image files only.
New Patient
Select the Advanced option from the Import drop-down. the Import Dialog will appear with the New Patient radio button selected. The Patient and Study fields will be empty.
Fill out the Patient and Study fields.
If importing non-DICOM data, make sure to add a date to the study prior to import or the study will not be searchable by date.
Select the desired images files to import either by drag and drop, clicking the Browse to Image(s), or Browse to Folder buttons.
Click the Import button to start the import process. Pressing the Cancel button will exit the form without importing.

Patient ID must be entered for non-DICOM images being imported into New Patient. If it is not, an error will be displayed and you will be returned to the Import Advanced dialog.
Only the admin user can import DICOM data with the Advanced Import. The local user will receive an error if a DICOM file is selected for Advanced Import.
Selected Patient
To import DICOM or non-DICOM image files into a selected patient, select the patient in the study list table. Next, select the Advanced option from the Import drop-down. This will open the Import Dialog. The Selected Patient radio button will be selected. The Patient information fields will be filled in automatically with the Selected Patient's information. Select the desired image files to import either by drag and drop, clicking the Browse to Image(s), or Browse to Folder buttons.
If importing non-DICOM data, make sure to add a date to the study prior to import or the study will not be searchable by date.
Click the Import to start the import process. Pressing the Cancel button will exit the form without importing.

The selected files will be imported as a new study (or studies) under the selected patient. Non-DICOM data will group into a single study. DICOM data will follow the existing study/series structure of the DICOM files users the selected Patient.
The local user is only able to import non-DICOM images into the Selected Patient. Only the admin user can import DICOM images in the Advanced import operations.
Selected Study
To import DICOM or non-DICOM image files into a selected study, first select the study in the study list table by checking the checkbox on the corresponding study tile. Select the Advanced option from the Import drop-down. This will open the Import Dialog. The Selected Study radio button will be selected. The Patient information fields will be filled in automatically with the Selected Patient's information. Select the desired image files to populate the upload box either by drag and drop, or clicking the Browse to Image(s) or Browse to Folder buttons.
If importing non-DICOM data, make sure to add a date to the study prior to import or the study will not be searchable by date.
Click the Import to start the import process. Pressing the Cancel button will exit the form without importing.

The selected files will be imported under the selected study. The modality of the study and the image count will be updated to reflect the additional files.
The local user is only able to import non-DICOM images into the Selected Study. Only the admin user can import DICOM images in the Advanced import operations.
Conflicts
When importing studies into existing patients, there can sometimes be conflicts between the patient information between SmartPACS and the image. When this occurs, the local user will see a notification that the study cannot be imported. In addition it will show what data is conflicting and which files are affected. Pressing the Cancel button will close the dialog.

The admin user will see a different notification when conflicts are detected. This dialog will allow the admin user to resolve the conflict in two ways. You can either change the imported images DICOM tags to what is on the PACS, or you can choose to create a new patient with a different Patient ID. Once you have made your selection, press the OK button to resolve the conflict. Pressing the Cancel button will abort the import.
